Why Your AC Is Dripping Water: Explained

Summer is here, and the need for a reliable air conditioning unit comes with it. While AC units keep you cool and comfortable, problems that prevent them from functioning properly can arise. One of the most common issues you may encounter is water dripping from your AC unit. So before contacting air conditioner services, here’s why your AC is dripping water and what you can do to fix it.

How Your AC Unit Works

The unit takes warm air from your house, passes it over a group of evaporator coils to cool it down, and then releases the cooled air back into your living area. As the warm air goes over the coils, water vapor transforms into liquid and falls into a condensate pan container. This water is then removed from the unit through a drain line.

Reasons There’s Water Leakage From Your Air Conditioner

Clogged Drain Line

Over time, dirt, dust, and other debris can accumulate in the drain line, preventing water from flowing out of the condensate pan and causing it to back up into the unit. This can lead to water leaking from the unit and potentially causing water damage to your home.

To fix a clogged drain line, use a wet/dry vacuum to suction out any debris blocking the line. You can also use bleach and water to clean out the line.

Dirty Air Filter

If the air filter gets filled with dust and dirt, it can hinder the flow of air in the system, leading to the freezing of the evaporator coils. When the coils defrost, the excess water can spill from the condensate pan and escape from the unit.

Hence, you must change your AC unit’s air filter regularly. Most manufacturers recommend changing the filter every 30 days, but this can vary depending on your usage and the type of filter you’re using.

Low Refrigerant Levels

When the refrigerant levels in your AC unit are insufficient, it can cause the evaporator coils to freeze, resulting in dripping water. Refrigerant cools the air in your AC unit; the unit cannot operate effectively if the levels are low.

If you suspect your AC unit is low on refrigerant, it’s important to call an AC repair professional to diagnose and fix the problem. This way, you can avoid further damage to your unit and higher energy bills.

Improper Installation

If your AC unit is not installed properly, it can lead to water dripping from the unit. The condensate pan may not be level, causing water to accumulate and overflow.

You’ll need an AC repair professional to inspect your unit to fix this issue. They may need to adjust the condensate pan or make other modifications to ensure your unit functions properly.

Final Thoughts

Water dripping from your AC unit is a common problem that various issues can cause. By understanding the causes and taking steps to prevent them, you can keep your AC unit functioning properly and avoid the need for costly air conditioner services.

If you’re experiencing water dripping from your AC unit and aren’t sure how to fix it, call an AC repair professional to diagnose and repair the problem. Proper maintenance and care can keep your AC unit cool and comfortable all summer.
