5 Effective Tips to Make your HVAC Ready This Summer

The start of summer marks the time that your air conditioner will work harder to keep your home cool and comfortable. Because of that, you need to make sure that your AC unit will work efficiently and run smoothly. Of course, nobody wants to have costly repairs to their HVAC system, especially when it’s scorching hot outside.

That’s why you need to make your HVAC ready for summer. Here are some tips for doing just that:

Replace your air filter regularly

Homeowners should recognize the importance of regularly changing their HVAC’s filter. This is because when the air filter is clogged, the air movement inside the furnace will be choked. The AC unit will only work properly when the air inside it can move efficiently and smoothly.

The furnace is intended to blow hot or cold air through your home. Whether during summer or winter, you need to ensure that your air filter is changed regularly to keep it functioning properly. Experts suggest doing that every 1-2 months, depending on the type of the air filter. According to HVAC professionals, changing your air filter regularly is the topmost important thing when it comes to HVAC maintenance.

Clean up the area around your AC unit

Check where your condenser or outdoor AC unit is located. Weeds, shrubs, and trees might have crowded it. If that’s the case, it may affect the efficiency of your unit. Make sure to clear out the area around your condenser; it also needs space to breathe. Allow a clear area of 2-3 feet around the outdoor AC unit to ensure good air circulation. If you allow it to be covered by leaves and branches, it will be forced to work harder and may result in damage or breakdown.

Perform a duct cleaning if you haven’t done it in five years

Over time, particulates in your ductwork will accumulate. Although this is normal since not all of these are caught by your air filter, it can negatively impact your health. If your air ducts haven’t been cleaned in the past five years, it’s due for duct cleaning. Dirty air ducts can trigger allergies and other health problems.

Learn the difference between your fan being ON or AUTO

You should be well-rounded in setting your HVAC unit. If you are at your home most of the time and you aim for the best air quality, you may set the fan to ON. On the contrary, if you’re consistently not at home and you want to save from lower utility bills, you may set it to AUTO. You can ask your HVAC professional to know more about how each setting works.

Avoid pushing your thermostat too low

There are times the temperature is too hot, and you may want to get your home cool more quickly. Although it is tempting, never push your thermostat too low until it’s down to the 60s. Doing this will not cool the house faster, but it actually puts a lot of pressure and strain on your system. The results: it may not function properly. Be patient when you are setting your thermostat. For instance, if you want your room to be 72 degrees, choose 72 from the settings. Having it at 70 will not help make the room colder faster.

Conclusion

Learning about the different HVAC tips will ensure that your system will run efficiently and smoothly. This summer, you may want to have cooler air in your home, but do not force the AC unit to work harder. Follow the recommendations given by your HVAC professionals.
