If your roof is leaking or if the storm has damaged its shingles and flashing, a repair is probably the only way forward. But dealing with roof problems in extreme weather can be more challenging. You’d want to protect your roof from further damage and stop any leaks, but your roofer may need more time to get to you.
Here are the temporary ROOF REPAIR SOLUTIONS while you wait for help:
1. Minimize or avoid water damage.
First, identify the leak to determine the extent of the damage (so far). For your safety, don’t attempt to locate the leak on a heavily damaged roof.
Cover up any holes with waterproof tarps. Place heavy boards around the perimeter of the tarp to secure it to the surface of the roof. Once your roofer arrives, they can remove the tarp. Plastic sheeting will also do.
Patch up minor leaks with roofing tape. For active drips, place towels around the affected area and place buckets beneath the leak to catch falling water.
Cover your furniture, and anything that can be damaged by water, with a plastic covering.
2. Patch the roof or flashing with roofing cement.
Apply roofing cement over the leak in order to keep the water from coming in, albeit temporarily. Push it into holes and cracks so it seals well, then spread liberally a few inches around the area to avoid more leaks.
You need a roofing trowel/ putty knife for proper application.
3. Use a high-grade roofing tar to cover a crack or a leak.
Pour a small amount of tar onto the roof, then spread it. This works best if you’re just fixing a small leak or a crack in a flat roof. It’s important to select the right tar, since formulations vary by type and brand. If you need to tar a roof in the rain, choose a rubberized tar that’s specifically applied in the rain.
4. Reattach loose shingles or replace broken/missing ones.
For loose shingles, smooth them back down or shift them into their place. If the shingles are either broken or missing, you can cut out a metal sheet into the shape of a shingle then attach it to the roof. This should temporarily block leaks while you
wait for help.
