Steps to Get Ahead of the SEER2 Regulatory Changes

Taking effect on January 1, 2023, the new SEER guidelines require all residential central air systems to have a SEER2 rating of 13.4 (14.0 SEER) in the North region. Northern contractors have a bit more leeway since they can still sell and install units built before January 1, 2023.

In the Southeast and Southwest regions, the minimum is  14.3 SEER2 (15.0 SEER)  for residential units below 45,000 Btu, and  13.8 SEER2 (14.5 SEER) for units 45,000 Btu and above. Units that don’t meet the  SEER2 standards can’t be installed after January 1, 2023.

In any region, heat pumps must have a rating of 14.3 SEER2 (15.0 SEER) and 7.5 HSPF2 (8.8 HSPF), although existing 14.0 SEER heat pumps may still be sold or installed if they’re built before January 1, 2023.

As a consumer, there are steps you can take to get ahead of the SEER2 regulatory changes

  1. Check if your unit needs to be replaced.

Getting a new air conditioner in 2023 is going to cost more.  If you’ll need to replace your AC in the next 2 years, a replacement now, before the new SEER2 regulations take effect, will save you money.

It’s worth considering replacing your unit if it’s 10 years old and past its warranty period, or if it keeps suffering from frequent breakdowns despite regular maintenance. A replacement is also recommended if running your unit causes unexplained fluctuations in your energy bills.

Aside from air conditioner condensing units, the following products will also be affected by the upcoming SEER2 regulations: heat pumps, gas furnaces, evaporator coils, and single-packaged units.

We’re happy to take a look at your unit to see if it’s in your best interest to replace it.

  1. Consider upgrading to a more efficient unit if you’re selling your home in the near future.

Do you fear falling behind in the race to sell?

A 14.3 SEER2 system makes your home more marketable and provides you with improved comfort while it’s on the market. Make sure the appraiser knows about your new system.

The initial cost of a new system is expected to be more expensive, but in return, you can enjoy lower monthly energy costs.

  1. Work only with contractors who fully understand the new compliance requirements.

Receiving a non-compliant system in 2023 will put you at risk of having to pay for another replacement. When you’re selling a home and a buyer requests a 14.3 SEER2 system to comply with the new standards, you’re losing money.
