Most furnaces, until around 2010, used pilot lights that were continuously burning, igniting the burners during the heating cycle. New furnaces don’t have pilot lights, but many older homes still come with constant flame/ “standing pilot” heating systems. Most of the time, issues with these systems can be fixed.

Some reasons why your furnace pilot light keeps going out:
- There’s a problem with the pilot orifice.
Debris, or any form of blockage or buildup, can disrupt the pilot light’s operation. If you notice any flickering, or yellow flame (instead of hotter blue) at the base of the flame, there’s probably a buildup.
- There’s a problem with the thermocouple.
This is a very common reason why your pilot light keeps going out.
Thermocouples are copper rods assisting the pilot light in keeping your furnace operating and safe. Like other parts of the furnace, a thermocouple can deteriorate over time, and eventually require replacement. This isn’t always the case, though. Sometimes, the thermocouple may just be off-center or dirty.
- Your gas regulator isn’t working properly
This doesn’t happen often. However, if the gas regulator outside your home isn’t working properly, it can negatively impact your appliances that use gas.
This is likely the case if the pilot light is also out in another household device, such as the water heater.
It’s best to call your gas company to address the issue.
- Drafts blow the pilot light out.
If there were leaks in your ductwork, or if your return air supply isn’t properly sized, it may result in an airflow that can blow a pilot light out. You’ll need a professional to inspect and fix the issue.
How to re-light the pilot light:
Unless you’re dealing with leaks and damaged parts, you can attempt to fix the issue on your own.
- Check your furnace’s manual/ use it to locate the pilot light.
- Turn the gas off. Wait for at least 5 minutes before turning it back on.
- Re-light the pilot light.
