Boiler lockout means that the boiler has effectively shut down. If your central heating isn’t working, this is the first sign that your boiler has gone into lockout.
If you have a new model, it will display a fault code, while older boilers will show a red light that’s either flashing or constantly lit.
It often indicates a problem with one of the boiler’s components or the whole system, and a ‘lockout’ prevents explosion, fire, or further damage.
Although a boiler lockout kicks in when something’s wrong, it’s not always an emergency that requires an engineer’s assistance. There are minor faults that you can try to fix on your own.
Here are the common causes of boiler lockout:
- Ignition failure
Boilers often lock out after three unsuccessful attempts to fire up. This can be due to a faulty ignition lead, a gas valve issue, or dirt and soot clogging the jet.
Accumulation of soot may result in a blocked burner, as well, but this can be easily fixed by cleaning the carbon buildup.
- Pump failure
The heating pump may blow a seal, seize up, or develop a fault resulting in boiler lockout. You can use your hand to feel the pump. If it’s working, you’d feel tiny vibrations coming from it. If there are damaged internal parts, it would feel hot.
If the heating pump is jammed, a simple, gentle tap should fix the issue.
- System blockage
Sludge can accumulate in the boiler, radiators, and pipework, resulting in a boiler lockout. If sludge blockage is the culprit, we recommend hiring a professional to flush the system.

- Check the boiler’s manual to see what the error/fault code means. Your boiler should show an error/ fault code on the display, which starts with an E or F.
- If you look at the front of your boiler you will usually see a reset button. Once you’ve figured out the root cause of the problem, press and hold this button to reset the boiler.
If you have an older boiler or a boiler that doesn’t have a reset button on the front, just refer to its manual for reset instructions.
