Believing in heating and cooling myths may come at a price. Bad advice will often compromise your comfort at home and keep your system from running efficiently. Here are the HVAC myths you need to stop following, so you can get the most out of your system.
1. If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.
When it comes to heating and cooling systems, it’s smart to schedule preventive maintenance at least once a year, even if nothing seems wrong.
While it requires money upfront, it can improve the performance of your system, and save you money in the long run.
It also helps prolong the lifespan of your HVAC system by reducing wear and tear on the unit and ensuring its components are in good condition.
And since preventive maintenance includes a thorough inspection of your HVAC unit, it’s possible to identify and fix any issues before they get worse.
2. You only need to change your air filter once a year.
Your air filter’s job is to prevent airborne contaminants from entering your living space. It will start failing at this job if you don’t change it regularly. However, changing it once a year isn’t enough.
We recommend doing so every 2-3 months, or more often if you have pets at home or if your unit is old. Or, you can watch out for the most common signs you need a new air filter: you see dirt on the filter, your home is dusty, you’re experiencing worse allergy symptoms.
A dirty air filter will also restrict your system’s airflow, so it’s forced to work harder and consume more energy. An unexpected jump in your utility bill can be due to clogged filters.
3. Thermostat placement matters.
For optimal heating and cooling, and to maximize your energy savings, the thermostat needs to be in a central location.
If it’s near a heating vent or an air conditioner, it can cause a false/inaccurate reading. This will force your HVAC system to work harder without ever reaching the temperature you desire.
Temperatures also tend to fluctuate near doors, windows, and direct sunlight, so keep the thermostat away from these locations so it functions properly.
4. A bigger HVAC system works better.
Your budget, room size, and unique comfort requirements determine the design of the HVAC system in your home. The type of system you prefer also comes into play, as each type is designed with a particular purpose in mind.
With an undersized or oversized system, you waste energy and compromise your comfort.
