How to Maintain Your Air Conditioner During the Off Season

As the temperatures cool down, you may be thinking about shutting off your air conditioner for the season. But before you do, you should do a few things to ensure your AC is properly maintained. By taking a few simple steps now, you can help prolong the life of your air conditioner and keep it running smoothly for years to come.

Here are a number of tips on how to maintain your air conditioner during the off-season:

1. Keep the Unit Clean

Both the inside and outside of your air conditioner unit should be kept clean. During the fall and winter months, leaves and other debris can accumulate on the unit, so be sure to remove these periodically. You should also vacuum the coils and fins inside the unit to remove any dust or dirt build-up.

2. Cover the Unit

When your air conditioner is not being used, it’s vital to cover the unit to protect it from the elements. You can purchase a cover specifically designed for AC units, or you can use a tarp or piece of plywood. Just be sure to secure the cover, so it doesn’t blow away in the wind.

3. Check the Freon Levels

A professional should check Freon levels in your air conditioner annually. This is important because if the levels are too low, it can damage the compressor.

4. Inspect the Unit Regularly

At least once every year, you should inspect your air conditioner unit for signs of damage or excessive wear and tear. This includes checking the unit’s coils, fins, and other parts for any damage. If you notice any problems, be sure to contact a professional to fix them for you.

5. Change the Filter of Your Air Conditioner

If you want to keep your air conditioner in good working condition, it’s important to change the filter regularly. A dirty filter can lead to the unit having to work harder, leading to premature wear and tear. It can also cause the unit to use more energy, increasing your utility bills.

6. Clean the Ducts

Ducts can get full of dust and debris over time, leading to poor air quality and decreased efficiency. By cleaning your ducts now, you can help ensure that your AC is running at its best next summer.

7. Clean the Evaporator and Condenser Coil

The evaporator coil is responsible for absorbing heat from the air inside your home, while the condenser coil releases heat to the outside air. Both coils are essential for the efficiency of your air conditioner.

If the coils are dirty, they cannot do their job correctly. This will cause your air conditioner to work harder, using more energy and costing you more money.

Cleaning the coils is a reasonably straightforward process. You must turn off your air conditioner and remove the access panel. Once you have access to the coils, you will need to use a brush or vacuum to remove any accumulated dirt or dust on them.

After cleaning the coils, you must replace the access panel and turn your air conditioner back on. You should notice an immediate difference in the efficiency of your air conditioner.

8. Call for Professional Service

Just like your car, your air conditioner needs to be professionally serviced and tuned up regularly. Scheduling a tune-up in the fall or winter months can help ensure that your unit is running correctly and that any potential problems are caught and corrected before they become significant issues.

Conclusion

It is crucial to maintain your AC unit even when you are not using it. This will ensure that it is in good working condition when you need it and will also help to prolong its lifespan. Some simple maintenance tasks you can do yourself include cleaning the unit, checking the filters, and ensuring the coils are clean. You should also have a professional service your air conditioning unit every year to ensure it runs efficiently.
