All residential central air systems now must have a SEER2 rating of 13.4 (14.0 SEER) in the North region, although units built before January 1, 2023, can still be sold and installed.

While the average lifespan of HVAC units is 15 to 20 years, they become less efficient as they age. So older models are likely to be less efficient compared to more modern units.
Some parts may also become unavailable over time, so if your unit is old and has been exposed to harsh elements, consider buying a new unit. We also recommend replacing your unit if it’s past its warranty period.
- Correct sizing and installation
Both oversized and undersized HVAC units will cost more to operate than properly sized systems. They will also have a harder time heating or cooling your home. Expect unreasonably high energy bills and uneven temperatures when your unit is too small or too big.

- Variable speed systems
Variable speed blowers can switch to variable power settings to save energy. They consume less energy when running since they run at slow speeds more frequently than at high speeds.
They also turn on and off less often. Considering how your AC uses a significant amount of energy to turn on, it’s easy to see how variable speed systems can boost efficiency.
However, the power setting of your furnace or AC will still matter.
- Two-stage systems
Considered more efficient than the standard system, two-stage systems can operate at a slower speed that consumes less energy, and at the high or “full blast” speed of your standard air conditioner.
