- The fuse in the heat pump is tripped or blown
A blown fuse/ circuit breaker is among the most common electrical problems with heat pumps. Resetting or replacing the fuse should resolve the issue.
However, if the fuse or circuit breaker continues to trip, it indicates a more serious problem that may require a professional to diagnose.
- The thermostat isn’t working properly
Functioning based on temperature, the thermostat turns the heat pump on when the indoor temperature falls below the set number. It also switches the heat pump off once the temperature you’ve set is reached.
So if your heat pump won’t turn on or isn’t reaching the desired temperature, check the thermostat settings. You can either recalibrate or replace the thermostat, depending on the problem.
- The compressor has gone bad.
The compressor is one of the main parts of the heat pump system. It circulates refrigerant between the indoor evaporator and outdoor condensing units so that it keeps flowing and absorbing heat.
The whole system fails once the compressor fails. If you notice odd noises from the compressor, or poor heating or cooling performance from your heat pump, there’s a good chance the compressor has failed. A bad compressor may also keep the heat pump from turning on in the first place, or cause your circuit breaker to trip frequently.
- The fan is malfunctioning
Is your heat pump not turning on or reaching the desired temperature? Check the fan, and replace it right away if it won’t move with a push. You shouldn’t run the heat pump at all if the fan is malfunctioning, or you may cause damage to the compressor.
- The reversing valve isn’t working properly
The reversing valve is responsible for switching between modes. So if your system seems unable to switch between heating and cooling modes, your reversing valve is probably stuck or malfunctioning.
To free up a stuck reversing valve, lightly tapping on its body often works. However, you may need to replace it in case of physical damage or mechanical failure.
