An efficient heating or cooling system improves the quality of the air you breathe and the temperature of your home. When investing in an HVAC unit, efficiency should be among the important factors to consider before making the jump.

SEER2 is the new efficiency standard that replaced SEER (seasonal energy efficiency ratio) on January 1, 2023. The minimum equipment efficiency ratings have changed since then.
All residential central air systems now must have a SEER2 rating of 13.4 (14.0 SEER) in the North region, although units built before January 1, 2023, can still be sold and installed.
But focusing on SEER2 alone may cost you. There are other factors that affect your AC’s efficiency, aside from SEER2.
Factors that Ultimately Decide HVAC Efficiency
- The age of your unit
While the average lifespan of HVAC units is 15 to 20 years, they become less efficient as they age. So older models are likely to be less efficient compared to more modern units.
Some parts may also become unavailable over time, so if your unit is old and has been exposed to harsh elements, consider buying a new unit. We also recommend replacing your unit if it’s past its warranty period.
- Correct sizing and installation
Both oversized and undersized HVAC units will cost more to operate than properly sized systems. They will also have a harder time heating or cooling your home. Expect unreasonably high energy bills and uneven temperatures when your unit is too small or too big.
Your system needs to be properly installed as well, so it’s crucial to hire only reliable, experienced HVAC technicians for the job.

- Variable speed systems
Variable speed blowers can switch to variable power settings to save energy. They consume less energy when running since they run at slow speeds more frequently than at high speeds.
They also turn on and off less often. Considering how your AC uses a significant amount of energy to turn on, it’s easy to see how variable speed systems can boost efficiency.
However, the power setting of your furnace or AC will still matter.
- Two-stage systems
Considered more efficient than the standard system, two-stage systems can operate at a slower speed that consumes less energy, and at the high or “full blast” speed of your standard air conditioner.
