SEER2 is the new efficiency standard requiring a higher level of efficiency for your AC and heat pump. It will take effect on January 1, 2023. Since the upcoming regulations and ratings affect the heat pump and AC units that you can buy and install, understanding SEER2 can help you utilize it to your advantage.
SEER2 Explained
An updated version of the SEER calculation, SEER2 (Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio 2) is the total heat removed from the conditioned space during the summer season.
The way static pressure is considered as part of its overall calculation in SEER isn’t realistic, so SEER2 makes up for such deficiencies. SEER2 still considers static pressure but in a different way.
The new M1 testing procedure utilized in SEER2 will increase the external static pressure of the systems by a factor of five. This is more in line with how the systems are actually set up in your home.
According to the new SEER guidelines, all residential central air systems, by January 1, 2023, must have a SEER2 rating of 13.4 (14.0 SEER) in the North region. However, HVAC companies can still sell and install units built before January 1, 2023.
In the Southeast and Southwest regions, residential units below 45,000 Btu must have a SEER2 rating of 14.3 (15.0 SEER), while systems 45,000 Btu and above must have a SEER2 rating of 13.8 (14.5 SEER). Units that don’t meet the SEER2 standards can’t be installed after January 1, 2023.
In any region, heat pumps must have a rating of 14.3 SEER2 (15.0 SEER) and 7.5 HSPF2 (8.8 HSPF), although existing 14.0 SEER heat pumps may still be sold or installed if they’re built before January 1, 2023.
What SEER2 Means for AC and Heat Pump Efficiency
The least efficient heat pump and AC unit that you can install next year will run more efficiently than the least efficient unit you can buy this year. This also applies to single-packaged units, gas furnaces, and evaporator coils.
HVAC manufacturers will redesign system components to meet new testing requirements. These changes consequently increase the cost of a new system, so homeowners can expect to pay more for a highly efficient unit.
Even if the upfront cost of SEER2-compliant units can be intimidating for many homeowners, the improved comfort and efficiency, as well as the lower monthly energy costs, may be worth it.
