When your furnace isn’t performing as well as it used to, there’s a good chance it’s due to a dirty, clogged filter. Just by looking at it, you can easily tell if this is the case. A gray or black filter, usually with bits of debris, is quite visible.
To improve the lifespan of your furnace and the health, comfort, and safety of your family, it’s important to change your air filter on a regular basis. However, at the store, you’ll often have to choose between two types of filters: the relatively cheap fiberglass filters ( which cost around $1-$2) and the pleated ones that cost more (around $12).
You’re probably wondering if it’s worth investing in a more expensive air filter. But here’s why cheaper filters may be your best option:
1.Cheaper filters still get the job done.
Like pleated filters, the fiberglass filters are just as capable of blocking large particles from getting into your furnace.
Fiberglass filters have a low MERV (Minimum Efficiency Reporting Value) rating, though (between 1-4 only), so they won’t do much to filter smaller particles.
So unless you have serious allergies, the cheaper filters will do. Replacing them on a monthly basis will also get the best results.
2. Fiberglass filters allow a lot more airflow in your home.
With less surface area than pleated filters, fiberglass filters allow the smaller particles to get through.
Pleated filters, on the other hand, can add more resistance to airflow, making the system more expensive to operate.
3. heaper air filters will use less energy, saving you money.
The higher the quality of air filter you decide to use, the harder your system has to work in order to pull air through it. This will require more energy.
There’s a chance your system can’t handle it. You might end up shortening the lifespan of your blower, which isn’t cheap to replace. We recommend installing filters with higher MERV ratings only after you’ve consulted with an HVAC professional.
