1. Cleaning and Maintenance for Whole-House Humidifiers
A whole-house unit is usually connected to the furnace blower, drawing water from your plumbing system. It works automatically to control indoor humidity levels.
It must be visually inspected and cleaned once or twice a month. We recommend maintaining it and shutting it down at the end of the season, when you’re not using it anymore.
For reservoir style whole home humidifiers, remove bacteria and mineral buildup by cleaning out the reservoir.
Clean foam evaporator pads monthly and replace them annually, as sediment and minerals that are in the water can easily harden them. This may limit the absorption and effectiveness of the pads.
You may also clean your humidifier with a cup of cleaning solution. Just pour it into the drain bin to combat the growth of mold, bacteria and algae.
There may be filters or other parts that need to be cleaned or replaced often. Check your unit’s instruction manual to verify.

A portable or room unit plugs into standard electrical outlets, so make sure the humidifier is safely unplugged before cleaning it.
The area surrounding the humidifier should be kept dry all the time, to avoid mold and any nasty build-up. If the area is damp, or if moisture is present in surrounding furniture or rugs, you may need to turn off and remove the humidifier at once.
Also, empty out the water basin after use, and always clean it with soap and water. Replace or clean filters as needed. To avoid leaving deposits in the humidifier, use only distilled water.
