Signs you Need to Replace your Garbage Disposal

Keeping your garbage disposal in tip top shape helps prevent drainage and plumbing problems.  But just like any appliance, a garbage disposal will eventually fail and need to be replaced. As a homeowner, it helps to be aware of the signs it’s time to replace your garbage disposal.

How long do garbage disposals last?

Most garbage disposals have a life expectancy of 10 years, give or take. Routinely maintained and cleaned units can serve your household for up to 15 years.

Over time the blades become dull, and the motor will eventually break down from natural use. Then, your garbage disposal will start clogging or acting up more often.

Some garbage disposal problems may be easy to fix, but you shouldn’t ignore the signs that it’s time to replace your garbage disposal.  

1. The garbage disposal’s reset button is leaking.

Your garbage disposal may be leaking for many reasons:  loose hoses connecting to the dishwasher, loose drain lines, leaky sink flange, worn out gaskets, etc.

If the leak is at the top or the side of the unit, there’s a good chance the problem can still be fixed. But if the reset button is leaking, it indicates an internal damage that’s beyond repair. It may be time to replace your garbage disposal if this is the case.

2. It’s creating abnormal noises.

If your garbage disposal is producing squealing sounds, the motor bearings have probably gone bad. Only a specialist can evaluate the issue and advise if you need to replace the unit.  

But a squealing sound coming from the appliance is a sign of a serious problem. If you hear it, it’s best to turn the garbage disposal off and unplug it right away.

3. The garbage disposal won’t turn on.

It’s a common issue that homeowners often encounter. If the garbage disposal won’t turn on, a broken motor is often the cause. Issues with your electrical source may also lead to this problem.

See if the circuit breaker has been tripped. If the disposal still refuses to turn back on and if the motor isn’t making any noise, the garbage disposal is beyond repair. It’s time to replace it.

4. Frequent resets are required.

Resetting your garbage disposal becomes necessary usually when it’s jammed or has overheated. This should seldom happen, unless your garbage disposal is starting to fail.

Pay attention to how often you’re pressing the reset button on your unit.
