For busy individuals and large families, having a reliable dishwasher helps save money and get dishes as clean as possible. But getting your plumbing system ready is as important as choosing the right dishwasher for your household needs and budget. To learn how to install a plumbing system for dishwashers, read on!
What you need to know before installing a plumbing system for your dishwasher:
1. If a dishwasher’s plumbing system isn’t set up correctly, leaks may occur, leading to wasted water and – in serious cases- water damage.
2. If you aren’t confident in your plumbing knowledge, consider hiring a professional for the job to make sure everything is done correctly from the get-go.
3. A power-cord connection is required to install a dishwasher. This can get daunting if you don’t know your way around electrical wiring.
The kind of plumbing you need for a dishwasher
Power-cord, drain line, and water supply connections are needed for your new dishwasher.
Power-cord connection
To wire in a power cord to your new dishwasher, you need to connect ground wire coming from the electrical source to the metal box of the dishwasher. You might have to purchase the power cord separately.
There are dishwashers that must be directly hard-wired into the electrical system. Some come attached with a cord and you’ll have to plug them into the wall socket.
You can easily purchase kits that let you plug the dishwasher directly into the wall socket, even if it’s meant to be hardwired.
Always refer to local and national electrical codes if you’re trying to accomplish this task on your own.
Drain line connection
This part requires you to work inside the sink’s cabinet and connect the dishwasher hose to a special drain fitting known as a Y-branch tailpiece. This tailpiece allows dirty water to flow into the drains . You might need to install it if your drain doesn’t have it already.
You can connect the drain line in different ways: through an air gap to the garbage disposal, through an air gap directly to the drain, in a “high loop” to the garbage disposal, and in a “high loop” directly to the drain.
The tools you need will vary depending on the configuration, and if there’s an air gap.
Water supply connection
To hook up water supply to your dishwasher, you may have to purchase the supply line, as it doesn’t come with the dishwasher.
Supply lines made of stainless steel are a smart option. To protect the supply line from any damage, see to it that the shut-off valve is within reach and shut the valve off if you’re not using the dishwasher for a long time. Regularly check for leaks, too.
