Reasons there are Black Specks on your Water

High-quality water at home is important not only for staying healthy but also for maintaining your appliances in top condition. In the long run, you save money with softened water, since it helps prolong the life of your appliances and keep them efficient.

So when you notice black specks on your water, it’s concerning. You’d want to quickly determine whether you have a water quality issue, then find an appropriate solution ASAP. To prepare you better, here are some of the reasons there are black specks on your water:

1. Excess minerals from the municipal water supply

The black specks on your water can possibly be trace amounts of manganese and iron. These minerals in small amounts aren’t harmful, in general, although the black specks are admittedly unsightly.

Your local government may be able to fix the issue, but for your peace of mind, you can get a water test to determine the mineral levels in the water.

Proper treatment, if there are any, is only possible after accurate water testing. To get your water tested, CONTACT US.

2. Your water heater is corroded…and is possibly at the end of its life

The water heater is more likely the reason there are black specks on your water, particularly if you notice these specks only when you’re using the hot water tap.

Possible causes of water heater corrosion include old age and mineral and sediment buildup. You may have to replace it as soon as possible.

Unless you know how to get the job done safely, we recommend leaving it in the hands of a professional plumber.

3. There may be other broken components, such as rubber parts (hoses, gaskets, washers, etc.) that are worn out

If the black specks feel rubbery in your hands, they’re probably just a damaged hose or gasket.

Over time, these parts are expected to break down. Replacing the rubber parts of your faucet should take care of the issue. Otherwise, you may have to call a plumber to inspect your system.

4. Old or damaged carbon water filters may have let iron and manganese particles through

The black specks in your filtered water can be debris, or iron and manganese particles, that a broken water filter let through. Regularly replace your filter to avoid this issue.

But if you have just installed a new water filter, what you’re seeing is probably carbon. If this is the case, the particles will appear like coffee grounds. They’re harmless to ingest, but you may find the water less appealing to look at.

Are the black specks on your water making you worry? Let us help you.
